Carmen Carache, mother of Darwin , 30, and Yeison Hernández Carache , 25, has lost both her sons to a foreign prison where she is terrified that they won’t survive. They have been in El Salvador’s notorious prison, CECOT since March 15th, 2025.
"My children are not used to hanging out with gangs, with criminals."
She says that, like others, Darwin and Yeison left for the United States a year and a half ago. They did so in search of economic opportunities with decent jobs, and what they encountered was abuse, mistreatment, and humiliation.
“They decided to migrate to buy a small house, start a business here in Venezuela.”
The mother explains that Darwin and Yeison were detained in North Carolina, where they worked as delivery men and barbers. "They were hanging out with several Venezuelans who lived nearby, and well, Immigration arrived and took them in a raid. From North Carolina, they took them to Georgia, and from there to Texas, where they were going to be deported to Venezuela."
"Last Saturday [March 15, 2025], my son called me at 10:00 a.m. and told us, 'Mom, they're deporting us. I'm in line about number 33.' They told us they were coming home to Venezuela.
“On Sunday, we woke up to the terrible news that they were taken to El Salvador," she recounts.
demanding the release of her children and other kidnapped people, she exclaims that her children "are not criminals; they have no criminal record here in Venezuela or anywhere else. They only went there to work."
Carmen told press that Yeison's wife is in the US; while Darwin's wife is in Venezuela with their daughter. "To this day, the girl" doesn't know what's happening to her father. She says that they lie to the little girl and tell her "No, your dad lost his phone."
She loves her father very much, and every day her father called her in the morning and afternoon. Even while he was detained, he communicated with her via video call. The cost of these last conversations was covered by family members, who had to top up their balance, she notes.
"We used to recharge him for those video calls, so he would have strength, because he saw his daughter, but now I don't know how they are. They haven't seen their children, nor their mother and wives, who are the ones who give them strength," he says with pain.
This is the translated transcript of the attached video of Carmen:
I am the mother of two immigrants, Darwin Hernández and Jason Hernández, who were in the Texas Valley detention center. Their last call was Saturday at 10:00 a.m., saying they were being taken out. They asked where they were being taken, and they said they were going home to Venezuela. That was on Saturday. From 10:00 a.m. until sunrise, we had no news of them. We presume they were transferred to El Salvador. We demand justice, since they are innocent people. And all their rights as human beings and as immigrants were violated. As a mother, I demand justice for Darwin Hernández and Yeison Hernández and all their companions who were there. We demand justice.
